Galicia - English Cemetery in death coast
I propose to make a simple route by one of the most charming places in Spain: "Costa da Morte" or Death Coast. This place is full of legends and facts that over time have built the history of this area. It is located where it joins the Cantabrian Sea to the Atlantic Ocean. It is famous for its big storms and gales. These weather events have caused many shipwrecks. The inhabitants of this area are accustomed to rescue shipwrecked in stormy weather.
The English Cemetery is an example of one of these shipwrecks. The training vessel of the British Army "The Sarpent" sank in 1870. Only three of 175 crew members survived, they were found on the beach next morning by a shepherd.
In the following days, the sea was depositing the lifeless bodies of another 172 crew of the Serpent, most of them were cadets. The Camariñas and Xavin neighbors buried at the cementery, now called "The English Cemetery". After this event, the priest of Xavin and the citizens were decorated by the British crown. For many years, whenever a British navy ship plying these costs, firing salvos of regulation going to the sea a wreath.
The route
The route begins in Camariñas, we can leave the car in the port area. From here comes a road that will take us to the wind farm. At this point, on the right there are a dirt road, not take. You have to take the direction of the fish farm. Just before reaching it, comes right out a wide track of land, this is the path we must take. At the beginning of the road there for a notice, indicating the road.
This dirt road go along the coast directly to the English Cemetery.
It is a rectangular building of low walls. Inside there is a tomb in memorial of dead and missing in the sinking.
